almost 4 years ago – Sat, Dec 09, 2017 at 05:05:40 AM

Thank you to all the backers who helped make this project a reality. We couldn't have done it without you. Your support will help to ensure Emil Milan's story is distributed and celebrated—inspiring further generations of artists, curators, collectors, and enthusiasts.

We will be sending updates in the coming weeks about our progress and you will be receiving surveys in a couple of weeks to help us fulfill your orders. But for right now we are going to take a moment and celebrate.

We are continuing to take pre-orders for the book so please share the project with your friends.

 Many, many thanks,

Help us share Milan's story and reach our stretch goal
almost 4 years ago – Wed, Dec 06, 2017 at 07:20:09 AM

Your support has helped make this project a reality.

Now we need your help to get to our stretch goal of $40,000 so 500 additional books can be printed and distributed to a larger audience after Kickstarter. Share the Kickstarter campaign with your friends, consider upgrading to a larger pledge amount, or buy an extra book as a gift. Any little bit moves us closer to helping elevate Emil Milan to his rightful place in American art and design history.

With our increased print run, dozens of books will be donated to art museums, libraries, and other institutions that have helped the research team over the last 10 years or are connected to Emil Milan.

Your pledge isn’t just to secure a copy of the book for yourself. Every dollar we raise is critical to ensure the book is distributed and celebrated—inspiring further generations of artists, curators, collectors, and enthusiasts.

Your efforts can be a catalyst for helping Milan get the notoriety that he so rightly deserves.

Thank you for your continued support,

Exciting offerings for the last 6 days
almost 4 years ago – Sat, Dec 02, 2017 at 04:03:42 AM

We are incredibly thankful for the support of our project. With only 6 days left we have been hard at work preparing new offerings to end our Kickstarter effort on a high note. There are some new offerings including:

  • $40,000 Stretch Goal—Help us print more books!
  • “Gift is on its way” Cards
  • Extended early backer pricing
  • New gift bundles available (save on shipping)

Be sure to take advantage of all the special offerings that are ONLY available during the Kickstarter campaign at http://kck.st/2ANEoSj.

$40,000 Stretch Goal—Help us print more books!

We are thrilled to have reached our Kickstarter goal! We do have an even bigger goal—to share Emil Milan’s story with the largest audience possible.

The funds we have raised so far on Kickstarter will fund the printing of books already pre-ordered through our Kickstarter effort. We set our initial goal low enough to make this book a reality. Although we have been thoughtful and economical in our design and production decisions, it’s still expensive to produce a book worthy of Emil Milan’s craftsmanship and style. We could have made a modest, digitally printed book. But Emil’s words “Make sure that what you make is the best that you can do” guided our design process. We aren’t simply making a book. We are making a book that pays homage to Emil Milan’s life, process, work, and influence. We are inspired to get this great story into the hands of as many people as possible.

You can help us add 500 books to our print run so we can have the book distributed to a larger audience after Kickstarter. Share the Kickstarter campaign with your friends and consider upgrading to a larger pledge amount. Any little bit moves us closer to helping elevate Emil Milan to his rightful place in American art and design history.

With our increased print run, dozens of books will be donated to art museums, libraries, and other institutions that have helped the research team over the last 10 years or are connected to Emil.

Your pledge isn’t just to secure a copy of the book for yourself. Every dollar we raise is critical to ensure the book is distributed and celebrated—inspiring further generations of artists, curators, collectors, and enthusiasts. Help us reach our goal today at http://kck.st/2ANEoSj.

“Gift is on its way” Cards

It’s holiday gift giving season so we wanted to offer a way for you to buy copies of the Milan publication as a holiday gift. We will send you a “Gift is on its way” card for you to give it the lucky recipient while the book is being printed. We will either mail you the card by December 20 to give as a gift or we can send you a pdf to print (see sample image of card below). We will follow up immediately after the Kickstarter campaign ends and find out who wants to receive these cards and we will get them mailed out right away. Buy multi-book packages and save on shipping. When the book is ready to deliver in April, 2018 we will confirm if you want all the books shipped to you or if you would like to have the gift book delivered directly to the gift recipient.

Extended early backer pricing

  • We have re-released ten 2-book sets of the limited edition at the early backer pricing. Buy two and give one as a gift. If you already purchased the limited edition at the regular price then consider buying two and you will save on the cost of both AND save on shipping.
  • The standard edition early backer pricing will be ending early next week so act now to get the best pricing.

Gift bundles and shipping options

Kickstarter orders deliver first

One of the many benefits of pre-ordering your books on Kickstarter is that you will receive your copies before anyone else. The Kickstarter orders will deliver in April of 2018. Any order received after Kickstarter won’t arrive until May or June of 2018.

4-book sets

In addition to the 2-book sets we have added 4-book sets of both the standard and limited edition books. Buy multiple copies and save on shipping. Four books cost you the same to ship as one.

Buying limited and standard books together

We realize that some backers may want to buy a limited AND standard edition. Maybe you want the limited edition to be kept in perfect condition and you want a standard edition to read. Or maybe you want the limited edition for yourself and to give a standard edition as a gift. Instead of adding these as pledge options, you can just add on the cost of a standard edition to your pledge amount and we will automatically send you an additional standard edition. So, if you buy a limited edition for $149 and you want to get an additional standard edition for $49 then just make your pledge $198 (plus the shipping cost) and we will know you want an additional standard edition. Once the early bird pricing for the standard edition is over then you just add $65 to your order and we’ll know to send you an additional standard edition. Add an additional book as a gift and we will send you the "Gift is on its way" card by December 20.

International buyers

The multi-book sets are a great way for you to save on shipping. Find a friend who wants the book and you both save on shipping. Or give some as gifts. Buy a 4-book set and save even more.

Take advantage of all of these special offers today at http://kck.st/2ANEoSj.

Our gratitude

We are so grateful for the support we are receiving for this project and thank you for your continued interest in Emil Milan.

Many thanks,
The Center for Art & Wood and the Emil Milan Research Team

New Emil Milan collector's edition released—only 15 available
almost 4 years ago – Fri, Dec 01, 2017 at 09:15:21 AM

We are excited to announce that we are releasing only 15 copies of this rare collector's edition of Emil Milan: Midcentury Master that includes a wood keepsake from Milan's own workshop. (If you are a subscriber to the Emil Milan newsletter then you have already received this information in advance of the general public.)

This collector’s edition is for the true Milan lover and book collector alike. In addition to the limited edition book and wood slip case this version comes with a one-of-a-kind keepsake made out of a piece of wood collected from Emil Milan’s workshop in Thompson, Pennsylvania after his death. The keepsake is laser etched with a quote attributed to Milan. It can be hung on a wall, placed on a shelf, or adorn a desk. It is truly a rare Milan collectable. Order on Kickstarter today before they are gone. http://kck.st/2iyrccA

There are 15 unique pieces of wood from Milan’s workshop. The collector’s edition books will have a special signature plate, hand numbered in an edition of only 15. Purchasers of this collector’s edition will be able to select the piece of wood they want from the 15 available (see photos below). Then, select from a series of Milan’s poignant quotes to be laser etched on its surface. The first person to buy the collector’s edition gets first pick from the wood pieces, and so on. Order fast to get first pick from the pieces of wood. http://kck.st/2iyrccA

The keepsakes come in a variety of hard woods and sizes and are left in the raw state in which they were found in Milan’s workshop. These pieces had been prepared by Milan himself and were waiting in his workshop to be made into spoons or other small items. Milan was frugal with his wood and used every scrap to make into a work of art. We are honoring his frugality by offering these “scraps” as beautiful collectables.

A small silver metal plate will be attached to the back of each piece of wood documenting its origin.

Selections of Emil Milan quotes for laser etching

(Note that some of the wood pieces are smaller and won’t be able to have the longer quotes etched onto them. Other quotes may be available to pick from at the time of final ordering.)

“I believe that each piece I do should be the best that could be done.”

“A sharp tool is a safe tool.”

“You control the tool. The tool does not control you.”

“Don’t make a potato.”

“Make sure that what you make is the best that you can do ... not just what you can get away with simply because others do not know what is good.”

“The more technology progresses, the more the personal touch is needed.”
